Biography
Christopher Diffey was born in Melbourne, Australia. He completed his Bachelor of Music (Honours) at Monash University in 2002, where he studied Vocal Performance under the guidance of Peter Mander. He subsequently continued his training on the Opera Course at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Philip Doghan and Audrey Hyland, graduating in 2008 with the prestigious DipRAM. In 2023, he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM), an honour bestowed upon alumni who have distinguished themselves within the music profession and made a significant contribution to their field.
During his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Christopher participated in masterclasses with Barry Banks, Mark Ainsley, Dennis O'Neill CBE, Julius Drake, and John Williams. He also presented two solo recitals featuring song cycles by Beethoven and Schumann. He was accepted onto the Josephine Baker Trust and was awarded the Rhoda Jones Roberts Scholarship (2006), the Norman McCann Scholarship, and the Picker Trust Award (2007). In 2010, he received the English Touring Opera Young Artist Prize, generously sponsored by Christopher Ball.
Since September 2016, Christopher has been a member of the ensemble at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. His roles there have included Lohengrin (Lohengrin), Max (Der Freischütz), Erik (Der fliegende Holländer), Edwin (Die Csárdásfürstin), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), the Witch (Hänsel und Gretel), Slimbroek (Der Schmied von Gent), Severin (Der Silbersee), Tanzmeister (Ariadne auf Naxos), Shuisky (Boris Godunov), Sandy (The Lighthouse), Tempo (Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno), Albert (Albert Herring), Melchior (Dark Spring), Nemorino (L'elisir d'amore), David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Don Ramiro (La Cenerentola), Orpheus (Orpheus in the Underworld), Jaquino (Fidelio), Valetto (L'incoronazione di Poppea), the High Priest (Idomeneo), Goro (Madama Butterfly), Eumete (Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria), and Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier).
Guest engagements have taken him to numerous leading opera companies and festivals throughout Europe. His cover assignments have included Peter Grimes (Peter Grimes) at Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) at Longborough Festival Opera and Iford Opera, and Triplet I and II in the world premiere of Clemency for ROH2.
As a concert soloist, Christopher has performed in Liszt's Faust Symphony at the Rosengarten Mannheim, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Philharmonisches Orchester Kiel and at the Rosengarten Mannheim, Franck's Les Béatitudes and Schumann's Belsazar with the Bachchor Heidelberg, Bach's St Matthew Passion and Mendelssohn's Paulus in Speyer, Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with the Whitehall Orchestra and at the Fishguard Festival alongside Catherine Wyn-Rogers and Peter Donohoe, Bach's Christmas Oratorio with Manchester Camerata and Leeds Philharmonic, Bach's Mass in A major with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and a recital of Baroque arias at London's Handel House Museum.
Christopher has worked with distinguished conductors including Marc Minkowski, David Parry, Sir Colin Davis, Gustav Leonhardt, and René Jacobs.
Future engagements include Tamino at Nationaltheater Mannheim during the 2025/26 season. In 2026/27, he will make his role debut as the title character in Hans Schüler's historic 1957 production of Parsifal at Nationaltheater Mannheim, make his debut with Opera Ballet Vlaanderen as Slimbroek in Der Schmied von Gent, and return to Theater Bielefeld for role debuts as Manrico in Il trovatore and Lysander in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

In der Saison 2026/27 gibt er dort sein Rollendebüt in der Titelpartie von Wagners Parsifal in der historischen Inszenierung von Hans Schüler aus dem Jahr 1957. Darüber hinaus debütiert er bei Opera Ballet Vlaanderen als Slimbroek in der Wiederaufnahme von Der Schmied von Gent und kehrt an das Theater Bielefeld zurück, wo er erstmals die Partien des Manrico (Il trovatore) und des Lysander (A Midsummer Night's Dream) übernehmen wird.
